For Teens

The teen years can be some of most difficult for every family living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).  As hormones become a huge factor contributing to high and low blood glucose levels, growing up means dealing with hormonal influences on diabetes management as well as emotions.  If you feel frustrated, confused or aggravated, you are definitely not alone!

Teens as well as their parents and siblings can find support online through Juvenation, creating a profile and joining groups for teens and parents of teens.  Parents can also request a JDRF mentor (see “Newly Diagnosed”).  A JDRF mentor is someone nearby who is either going through the teen years, or it can be an adult who can serve as a role model for a teen with T1.

Also reach out to local parent-groups to create get-togethers for teens!  If you would like to have a small gathering, you can also contact JDRF at eromero@jdrf.org to bring families together.  In 2012, our Young Leadership Committee will work to create weekend events for teens with TID to have fun and socialize.  For information on events for families and teens, check our events page!  Make sure you receive event notices via email by contacting JDRF.
